So you have a new camera, but don’t know how to use Lightroom just yet (trust me, I still haven’t figured it all the way out), or you’re messing around with your phone and you want to take something you’ll feel proud of posting. Downloading editing apps is definitely helpful, and will bring your Instagram game to the next level, but they aren’t always necessary. (Check out the 4 free apps I use for Instagram here if you must!) For now, these 5 rules will keep your pics looking professional without too much effort!

Stand in indirect light

Direct light casts harsh shadows across the face and body, which kind of obscures it. Find a spot under the shade of a tree or building, or face a well- lit window. Be sure not to take a photo with the window behind you though, or you’ll just end up a dark, silhouetted blob.

Play with your camera settings

If you are shooting with an actual camera, odds are good you have a “backlight” and “direct light” setting that you can use to take your photos. Play around with the settings and see which ones work in the light that you have. I’m terrible at reading manuals, but you could also try that! If you’re more my style, start pressing buttons and see what happens- I live on the edge! My favorite discovery was the backlight setting- it’s a gamechanger.

Know your angles

Use your best features to your advantage! A look over the shoulders, the camera facing down at you, a hand on the hip- all of these could be part of your next great shot! Just play and have fun, you’ll start to recognize which ones are worth repeating. For me- it always involves playing with my hair! If you need help getting into this one, play some great music and just start dancing while your photographer or friend starts snapping away.

Steam your clothes

If you have big old wrinkles in your outfit, that’s where my eyes are going to go. It’s even worse if you hope to work with brands or give advice on fit to your followers. Make the clothes sing by ensuring they look their best!

Don’t be afraid to emote!

Whether it’s a pouty lip and a badass stance, or a full-blown laugh attack- emotions make your photos more dynamic. A simple expression can sometimes fall flat, but a more interesting one can help tell a story. What is your intention behind the photo? Where will you display it? Who are you trying to communicate with? Basically, when posing, don’t hold back!

Now it’s time to set up an at-home photo shoot in the backyard. What else are we going to do these days anyways? Get to snapping and tag me in your pictures on Instagram
