Let’s hit the ground running. 2020 is going to be a new year, a new decade, and a new roaring twenties just waiting to be dolled up and taken out for a night on the town. It’s time to shine and I’ve got 10 New Years fashion resolutions I’m taking on, and I’m challenging you to join me!

Try a new trend

2020 is already gearing up for some fun new trends like puffy sleeves and big bold florals. Try one, even if it scares you. You could always start small- if an entire dress is intimidating, try it out on a scarf or shoe first. You might fall in love with something totally new.

Try on something a salesperson suggests

Want to try a new trend and don’t know where to start? Ask the sales associate! They know more about the layout of the store, and they’ve seen lots of folks try on the same items day in and day out. Let them suggest something entirely new to you, and be truly open to trying it on. Odds are especially high that you’ll find something amazing, and if not, just put it back!

Be kind to yourself in the fitting room

If things don’t go entirely to plan in the fitting room, be kind to yourself. Remember, the clothes are supposed to fit you, not the other way around. I wrote a whole post about tackling the challenges faced in the fitting room, so check it out before you go shopping.

Buy less junk

The fashion industry is, unfortunately, one of the biggest contributors of waste on this planet. It’s so important to think about where our clothes come from (and why retailers like Forever 21 aren’t sustainable). We can make a difference by voting with our dollar, even if that means buying second hand, buying less, or just buying more quality items.

Try an accessory you usually don’t wear

I tried pearl hair clips this year and didn’t hate them! I rocked a newsboy cap and a skinny scarf and I didn’t die! Let this be the year you GO FOR IT. Pair it with the trend you are going to try. Start with a hat, a bold belt, or some new hair accessories!

Support brands that carry inclusive sizing IN STORE

This is personal for me. I’m tired of being told I can order online when I want to pick up the item TODAY. I also want to make sure that if it’s something available online, that I will take the effort and mention it directly that I’d prefer to see the items in store. Being told to order two items just to return the size that didn’t work isn’t going to be an option anymore- I’m over it!

Conduct a closet audit

Time to get all Marie Kondo over here and throw it out if it doesn’t bring joy! I’ll be combing through everything I have and taking inventory of what I actually have the space for, what I’ve actually been wearing, and what can get listed in my Poshmark store!

Get inspiration from a diverse array of influencers

If your feed is looking a little homogenous, I’d recommend finding some new folks to follow. Style doesn’t have a size, race, or gender so follow some of these folks who are creating amazing content that mainstream media is sorely missing out on.

Show off your style!

So you’ve cleaned out the closet, you’ve tried a new trend and a style the salesperson suggested to you, you’ve followed new folks on Instagram, now it’s time for a selfie or two. Stop hiding behind the camera, or only posting pictures of your dog out here (though I love pictures of your pets please keep them coming!). Show your friends and family what they actually want to see- YOU.

Read up

Learn more about where your clothes come from, what metals your jewelry is made of, or who is currently designing for your favorite fashion house. This step will make the rest so much easier because you will be in control and in the know! A quick google search of your favorite brand or designer will get you started, or just follow a few fashion news outlets on social media. Vogue, WWD, and Diet Prada are my fashion news faves.

So let’s regroup same time next year and compare notes (and selfies)! I hope to see you out there doing the damn thing well into the New Year! Cheers!
